Corrugated boxes are everywhere but do you know what exactly it is?

First things first, cardboard box and corrugated board are not the same things.
Cardboard is a heavy-duty paperboard which is used to pack products like cereals, medicines etc. but is not used as a shipping box.

Corrugated box, on the other hand, is much more durable and has two main components: liner and medium. A “liner” is a paper on the outside or inside the box. A medium is a fluted paper (looks like waves) that lies between the liner.

Paper Flute is formed when a paper web is passed through two hot corrugating rollers. These flutes are integral in protecting the content of a box during transportation. This corrugated medium is then sandwiched between the liners, with the help of starch-based adhesive to make the amazingly durable structural material, i.e. corrugated board. The figure below shows this process.

The curved arches, as part of flutes, makes the board durable and resists pressure applied from any angles. After that, the corrugated board is converted into a structure that can sustain long shipping journey, bumps and falls. And this is how a corrugated box is made.

Isn’t it amazing?
